Minya occupies a unique position in Egypt, both geographically and historically. Situated between Upper and Lower Egypt, it served as a crossroads of culture, religion, trade, and ideas for thousands of years.
The region contains some of Egypt’s most significant archaeological sites, including Tell el Amarna, the revolutionary capital established by Pharaoh Akhenaten; Tuna el Gebel, the largest Graeco-Roman necropolis in Egypt; El Ashmunein (ancient Hermopolis), the center of worship of the god Thoth; and Beni Hassan, famous for its vividly painted tombs that preserve remarkable scenes of daily life.
Unlike the crowded monuments of Luxor and Aswan, Minya offers visitors the opportunity to explore Egypt’s history in a quieter and more authentic setting while enjoying direct connections with local communities and landscapes.
Tell el Amarna
Founded in the 14th century BC by Pharaoh Akhenaten, Tell el Amarna was the short-lived capital of ancient Egypt and the center of one of history’s most dramatic religious transformations.
