El Kab is one of Upper Egypt’s most remarkable yet lesser-known archaeological sites. Known in antiquity as Nekheb, it was once the capital of Upper Egypt and the cult center of the vulture goddess Nekhbet, protector of the pharaohs.

Our visit begins with a journey inland from the Nile, offering a unique perspective on Egyptian life. As you walk away from the river, you experience firsthand the dramatic transition from fertile agricultural land to the surrounding desert landscape. This contrast illustrates the essential role the Nile has played in sustaining Egyptian civilization for thousands of years.

The small village near our Dahabiya mooring provides an opportunity to support the local community. Visitors can purchase baskets handmade from recycled materials by local girls, helping promote sustainable practices while providing income for village families. The site itself preserves evidence of continuous occupation stretching from prehistoric times through the Ptolemaic Period. Archaeologists have discovered traces of settlements dating back to around 3000 BC, as well as indications of even earlier human activity, including prehistoric graffiti and important cemeteries from the Naqada III period.

One of El Kab’s most impressive features is the enormous mudbrick enclosure wall attributed to Nectanebo II of the 30th Dynasty. Covering approximately 30,000 square meters, the wall remains one of the largest surviving mudbrick structures in Egypt and offers insight into the scale and importance of the ancient city.

The highlight of the visit is the New Kingdom necropolis. Here, tombs belonging to governors and officials of El Kab are cut into the cliffs overlooking the Nile Valley. Their beautifully preserved scenes depict daily life, religious rituals, military achievements, and agricultural activities, providing valuable insights into ancient Egyptian society. The artistic style shares many similarities with the famous noble tombs of Luxor but is often enjoyed without crowds.
