About this attraction

Al Azhar Park is one of Cairo’s most successful urban renewal projects. Opened in 2005, the park transformed what was once a large mound of accumulated debris into one of the city’s most beautiful green spaces. Situated on one of Cairo’s highest points, it provides spectacular views over Historic Cairo, the Citadel, and the City of the Dead.

Created by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, the project not only established a much-needed public park but also contributed to the restoration of important historic monuments in the surrounding area. During the development process, archaeologists uncovered a significant section of Cairo’s 12th-century Ayyubid Wall, originally built under Salah El-Din (Saladin), which was carefully restored and can now be viewed from within the park.

Today, Al Azhar Park serves as a recreational space for both locals and visitors. Beautifully landscaped gardens, fountains, walking paths, restaurants, cafés, and open lawns make it an ideal place to relax while enjoying some of the best views in Cairo.

The park offers a unique contrast between nature and history, with the skyline of medieval mosques and minarets forming a dramatic backdrop to its green spaces.
